TToday we’re talking about what to expect in the high-profile and racially-charged murder trial of Derek Chauvin. The trial begins Monday.

Chauvin is a former Minneapolis police officer accused of killing George Floyd on May 25, 2020.

A witness video, now seen around the world, appears to show Chauvin using his knee to pin Floyd down on the ground for several minutes. The case sparked nationwide protests and unrest.

Now, the world will be watching as a jury hears the case and decides whether Chauvin will be convicted and put in prison or acquitted and allowed to go free.

Dr. Sam Sommers is an experimental social psychologist interested in issues related to stereotyping, prejudice, and group diversity. His research examines the general intersection of psychology and law, jury selection and jury decision-making, and the effects of diversity on group processes and deliberations. He received the Saleem Shah Early Career Award from the American Psychology-Law Society and has testified as an expert witness on research concerning racial bias in the legal system in criminal proceedings in six states.
