Trump’s Tax Returns Ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled prosecutors can see President Trump’s tax returns and other financial records. Prosecutors in New York City have been looking into how the president spent his money in the run-up to the 2016 election. As part of that investigation, they formally asked to see financial documents. Trump refused, saying he had presidential immunity. Justices disagreed. However, they did prevent Congress from getting the same financial records, for now, sending the case back to the lower courts.

COVID-19 Deaths Rising
For weeks, the number of deaths from COVID-19 has been decreasing, even as the number of new cases increases. However, in some places, that’s changing. The average daily death toll has more than doubled recently in Texas, Florida, and Arizona. All three were among the first two ease restrictions back in May. However, that may not be the only reason for the spike. Memorial Day weekend gatherings and mass protests could also be to blame.

Trump NH Rally Concerns
President Trump’s next rally is set for this weekend in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. However, there are concerns because of COVID-19. New Hampshire’s Republican governor says he won’t be going to the rally, but he encourages those who do to wear face coverings and social distance. This campaign event could be safer than previous ones though. It’s outdoors, so there will be better airflow. Also, New Hampshire’s average number of cases has been going down. Masks are optional.

Biden Economic Plan
The Democratic presidential nominee says he has a plan to create five million jobs in the U.S. Former Vice President Joe Biden wants the federal government to invest $400 billion in the manufacturing industry. He wants another $300 billion to go to research and development in other industries, like technology. This comes in direct competition with President Trump’s “America First” plan. Trump has emphasized protecting American workers and moving away from a global economy.

“Broken Heart Syndrome” Increase
A new Cleveland Clinic study shows more and more people are getting “broken heart syndrome,” also known as stress-induced cardiomyopathy. That’s when the heart enlarges during intense emotional stress. It feels like a heart attack, but patients recover quicker. It’s usually treatable. The new research looked at two Ohio hospitals and found the number of cases doubled compared to before the pandemic. However, more research is needed to make the connection.

Glee Star Likely Drowned
An actress who once starred on the TV show, Glee, has mysteriously vanished, and is now presumed dead. Naya Rivera, who played Santana Lopez on the show, disappeared after a lake trip Wednesday. She rented a boat with her four-year-old son.  A few hours later, a rental employee found the boat with only the little boy on board. He is safe and healthy, but no sign of Rivera. Search crews looked all day yesterday. Now, they say they’ll search for her body, so her family can have closure.

The Wonder Years Reboot
The Wonder Years is getting a reboot. The award-winning TV show was popular in the late 80s and early 90s. This time around, the show will have a new cast. It will feature a Black family instead of a white one. The goal is reportedly to have the show ready for the 2021-22 season on ABC.

Disney World Reopening
Walt Disney World is set to reopen in Florida this weekend. The theme park complex has been closed for nearly four months because of COVID-19. Tomorrow, the Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom parks will open. Visitors will have to undergo fever checks and wear masks. Meet-and-greets with characters are also off-limits. Fireworks shows and parades have been canceled. Epcot and Hollywood Studios are set to reopen next week.

The American Century Championship golf tournament starts today. It includes tons of celebrities like basketball stars Steph Curry and Charles Barkley, football players Aaron Rodgers and Jerry Rice, and boxing great Oscar De La Hoya. It seems billionaire Warren Buffett is making good on his promise to give away most of his wealth. This year alone, he’s donated $2.9 billion to charity. In all, the 89-year-old has donated $37.4 billion in the last 14 years. Still, Forbes magazine says Buffett is worth $71.4 billion.

Feel Good Friday - WNBA Star Helps Free Prisoner
A WNBA star put her career on hold to free an innocent man from prison. Maya Moore sat out the past two seasons so she could fight to free Jonathan Irons and pay his legal fees. Irons was convicted as a teenager of burglary and assault, even though his lawyers said there was no physical evidence. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Irons has always maintained his innocence. Last week, a judge overturned his conviction. After 23 years in prison, he walked out a free man.
