We’re diving deep into Shark Week! The world-famous, weeklong event starts tomorrow (July 11) on the Discovery Channel and on Discovery+. This year’s event has more hours of programming than ever before.

Today we’re joined by longtime shark week host Paul de Gelder. He has a fascinating story. He was attacked by a shark a few years ago, returned to diving a few months later and has since become a world-renowned shark advocate.

Paul talks about his love of sharks, why he feels they need protection and gives us a sneak peek of what to expect from Shark Week 2021.

Guest: Paul de Gelder

Paul de Gelder is a Shark Week host and motivational speaker. He previously served in the Australian Defence Forces as an Army paratrooper and then as a Navy bomb disposal diver.

In February 2009, while diving for the Navy, Paul was attacked by a bull shark and lost two limbs. He fought through excruciating pain, smashing challenge after challenge while amazing the medical staff and the Australian public with his will to succeed. His inspiring story as detailed in his autobiography “No Time for Fear” takes the saying “never say die” to a whole new level.

Paul has since traveled the world as a top motivational speaker, passionate environmentalist, adventurer and mentor to school kids. As a Shark Week host, he has learned to hand-feed Bull Sharks, Hammerheads and Blue Sharks. He also dives with Tiger Sharks and Great Whites without the protection of a cage.
