RUSSIA SANCTIONS

The Trump administration says new sanctions against Russia will be coming soon.
 
Why? British and US officials believe Russia is to blame for poisoning a former Russian spy and his adult daughter in the UK. Remember that? They were poisoned with a rare nerve agent back in March.
 
The Guardian reports the move would put restrictions on sensitive tech being sent from the US to Russia. FOX News says it could impact hundreds of millions of dollars worth of trade with Russia. More severe measures could come later.
 
For now, the sanctions just announced will go into effect later this month.

TIT-FOR-TAT TARIFFS

More trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies: the United States and China.
 
Now, Reuters reports, China is putting tariffs of 25 percent on $16 billion worth of US goods going into China, from fuel and cars to steel and medical equipment.

This is all in retaliation because guess when these new tariffs will go into effect... The very same day later this month that the US plans to start levying tariffs on Chinese goods.

FIRST MUSLIM CONGRESSWOMAN

She’ll likely become the first Muslim woman ever elected to Congress.Rashida Tlaib won the Democratic primary in Michigan this week.

She’ll only face write-in candidates in November, so she’s expected to win the U.S. House of Representatives seat. She’ll take the spot of a congressman who resigned because of sexual harassment accusations.

INSIDER TRADING

A New York congressman is now charged with insider trading. 

CBS News says he’s accused of getting inside info about a biotech company and then helping his son make stock trades. Not allowed. Rep. Christopher Collins, his son, and the father of his son’s fiancée all pleaded not guilty.
 
For now, Collins plans to run for his seat again in November’s midterm election.

NYC UBER LIMIT

The decision is made: New York City is officially putting limits on Uber and Lyft. It’s the first US city to do something like this.
 
City Council members voted yesterday to limit the number of licenses for ride-hailing cars on city streets for a year and to study the industry in that time. It also means the city can set a minimum wage for Uber and Lyft drivers.
 
Uber and Lyft, of course, are not happy. They’ve argued this will lead to longer wait times and less reliable service. City council members say it’s not true, and that too many for-hire cars are just causing more traffic.

The Verge says those cars outnumber yellow taxis in New York City four to one. The big question: will any other cities follow suit with new regulations?

CA WILDFIRES "PROGRESS"

In California, wildfires are still a huge problem - literally huge - with the largest wildfire in state history.
 
The good news? The AP reports that firefighters are finally able to say they’re making some progress on it, but it won’t be fully under control until September.

The Mendocino Complex fire in California, north of San Francisco, is the size of Los Angeles. It started two weeks ago.

NFL'S MALE CHEERLEADERS

NFL history is being made this season: for the first time, male cheerleaders will be on the sidelines.
 
CNN says the L. A. Rams accepted two guys to the cheerleading team. The New Orleans Saints will have one man on the team.

CHANGES TO THE OSCARS

The Academy is making a few changes to next year’s Oscars. The most talked about? A new category for Best Popular Film.
 
The Hollywood Reporter says not everyone is thrilled with the idea, and some people are asking: what exactly makes a movie "popular"? Will movie execs even want this award? Actor Rob Lowe tweeted “the film business passed away today with the announcement of the ‘popular’ film Oscar.”
 
The Academy said the details are still being worked out. It’s probably happening because the ratings this year were a record low.
 
Another change just announced? A shorter live show (three hours max). The next Academy Awards will be February 24th, 2019.

ENTERTAINMENT ROUNDUP

First up: TechCrunch reports  you can expect a discounted bundle option when Disney’s new video streaming service comes out next year – that is, if you get all of Disney’s streaming options: the new one, Hulu and ESPN+. Disney already owns ESPN, and it will own 60 percent of Hulu once its deal with 21stCentury Fox goes through.
 
Next: If you’re a fan of Apple Music, Mashable says Verizon is teaming up with Apple to offer six months of Apple Music free of charge to any Verizon Unlimited customers.
 
Finally: People Magazine says country superstar Carrie Underwood is pregnant with her second child.
