Judge: “Presidents are not kings”:
A new ruling from a federal judge says not even the president’s closest aides can ignore a subpoena from Congress. Docs Detail Detention Camps:
Newly leaked documents detail China’s efforts to brainwash hundreds of thousands of people while holding them in detention camps. About one million people, mostly from the Muslim Uighur community, have been detained without a trial. The Chinese government claims the camps in western China are for voluntary training and education, but official documents reportedly describe orders for video surveillance to prevent escapes and a behavior-based scoring system to decide their fate.

CO2 Hits Record High:
A report from the World Meteorological Organization found the concentration of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere hit an all-time high last year. Scientists don’t expect the trend to slow down. The United Nations will hold a meeting next month to discuss how to fight climate change.

Airport's “Digital Dog Nose”:
Researchers are working on new tech that's meant to help speed up long airport security lines. A new sensor being tested now can reportedly detect homemade bombs just as well as a bomb-sniffing dog does. The cell phone-sized device can be mounted on a drone. Also, TSA is working on other tech for the so-called “Innovation Checkpoint” that's being tested at an airport in Las Vegas. It can scan IDs and scan carry-on bags in a way that doesn't require travelers to remove liquids and electronics.

Three Major Mergers:
1) Luxury goods company LVMH is buying Tiffany & Co. for $16 billion, ending Tiffany’s 182-year run as an independent company. It’s the biggest deal ever in the luxury sector. 2) Charles Schwab is buying TD Ameritrade. The two brokerage companies will create a mega-firm with $5 trillion in assets. 3) eBay is selling StubHub to its rival Viagogo. Once they combine, the companies will sell tickets across 70 countries.

First Mississippi Lottery Allowed:
For the first time, Mississippi has a lottery. Lawmakers have been against it for years but now plan to put some of the revenue toward the state’s infrastructure. Scratch-off tickets are available now, and jackpots like Powerball and Mega Millions will go on sale in January.

Uber vs. London:
Uber has been stripped of its license to operate in London because of a “pattern of failures” that put passengers at risk. London officials say unauthorized drivers uploaded their photos to approved drivers’ accounts so they could pick up passengers, and it happened on at least 14,000 trips. Uber plans to appeal the decision and will continue operating in London during the process.

Facebook 'Viewpoints':
Facebook wants to pay users to take surveys for research purposes. The info provided to the Viewpoints app will be used to improve Facebook’s social media apps. Participating users will gain points for completing surveys and reviewing apps that can eventually be redeemed through PayPal payments.

Netflix Saves Historic Theater:
Manhattan’s last single-screen movie theater will stay open thanks to Netflix. Netflix is leasing the iconic Paris Theatre and will use it to showcase some of its original films (larger chains have refused to play Netflix originals).
